Governance

This section covers information relating to the way the University of the Highlands and Islands is governed and how decisions are made.

 

It includes information on the legal status of the university, which individual member of staff or group within the organisation is responsible for specific functions and where they fit in the overall structure of the organisation.   In some instances information from committee minutes will be exempt from disclosure where it contains personal information, information which may substantially prejudice the commercial interests of any person, information which may endanger the physical or mental health or the safety of an individual, or information which may substantially prejudice the effective conduct of public affairs.

Legal framework

The University of the Highlands and Islands is a company limited by guarantee. UHI has concluded a number of agreements with its academic partners for the supply of teaching, research, and associated services for higher education.

Governance precepts

Compliance with government legislation and with the requirements for the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and other statutory bodies is the duty of the Court. The Court exercises its duty through the Secretary to the Court. The Secretary to the Court fulfils this duty with the help of the university Compliance Officer.

UHI's compliance and equality officer's role is to oversee compliance in all legislative areas. The actual work of compliance is carried out by several administrative departments in UHI.

Major committees

The major committees with devolved decision making powers can be found within the organisational structure of the UHI web site.  Major committee papers are available in hard copy by request from the relevant person or department within the executive office.

The Foundation and relationship with the UHI

UHI's equivalent to the General Council is the Foundation.

Subsidiary companies

UHI has no subsidiary companies.

Honorary degrees

UHI does not currently award honorary degrees. It does however award honorary fellowships.
