Dr Jeff HowarthVice-Principal (Enterprise)

Having trained as a soil chemist at the Universities of Newcastle and Reading, Jeff completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of Birmingham and subsequently worked on postdoctoral studies in the minerals and the chemical engineering departments. He spent 17 years at the National Engineering Laboratory, eventually as centre manager of the energy and environment centre leading teams delivering contract research and technology services in fluid, thermal, automotive, noise and environmental and risk engineering. He moved to Highlands and Islands Enterprise in 2003 to work in the development of research and commercialisation activities in the region.

Jeff joined the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2007 as Vice-Principal for Research and Enterprise, leading the strategic development of research, knowledge exchange, the graduate school, the European office and research office.

Jeff became Vice-Principal for Enterprise in October 2013, and leads the contract office, the European and international development office,  health research operations, knowledge exchange, business planning and development, and academic development activities on the Inverness Campus.
