Dr Joe Irvine

As Director of Knowledge Exchange, Dr Joe Irvine's role is to ensure the UHI Knowledge Exchange function maximises value from innovation whether that be by the commercialisation of UHI research or through developing collaborative links and projects with industry, social enterprises and the public sector.

Born and brought up in the Shetland Isles, Joe’s background is in research obtaining a PhD from Edinburgh University Medical Faculty followed by 10 years of biochemical research in a number of settings (Moredun Research Institute, Edinburgh; Louisiana State University Medical Centre, USA; Stirling University and Glasgow University).

Joe then moved into industry and spent 5 years working for a biotechnology spinout company from Cambridge University based in the Isle of Man, at the same time gaining an MBA (distance learning) from Durham University.

After returning to Shetland, Joe worked remotely as the University of the Highlands and Islands Research and Commercialisation Manager, progressing to Head of Knowledge Exchange and then to Director.
