Chief Operating Officer and Secretary

Fiona has undertaken a variety of roles within the University of the Highlands and Islands since June 2007. She initially fulfilled the role of Assistant Secretary, prior to her appointment as Deputy Secretary in September that same year. She was appointed to the role of Secretary in October 2009. In January 2013 Fiona's title was changed to Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to reflect the breadth of her role.

Fiona's responsibilities include managing all corporate, legal and constitutional matters for the university, providing advice to the court and senior officers and, in conjunction with the principal, ensuring the court's decisions and policies are implemented. Fiona also undertakes the role of company secretary to the University Court ensuring that the university complies with company legislation and with the requirements of OSCR (the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator). In addition, Fiona oversees the organisation's decision-making, business and governance processes and provides professional leadership for senior officers.

Prior to working with the university, she was a general manager with Vertex Data Science Ltd (part of the United Utilities Group) and with Cap Gemini. She previously held the post of Chief Executive of Inverness and Nairn Local Enterprise Company, part of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise network.
