  • You will learn through face-to-face lectures and tutorials at Orkney College UHI and VC tutorials with experts based at other UHI campuses
  • There is also a significant amount of fieldwork that involves excavation, investigation and curation techniques in one of the world's best archaeological classrooms
  • This course may be studied by international students based within the UK.

How long will my course last?

  • Full time: 2 years @ 35 hours per week
  • Part time (structured): 4 years @ 12-18 hours per week
  • Part time (unstructured): 6 years (maximum)

Number of hours per week indicates the total number of hours you should dedicate to the course, which includes time spent in lectures and your own time spent on individual study and research.

What funding can I apply for?

The MA Archaeological Practice is recognised by the Canadian loans system, therefore students from Canada can apply for funding to study archaeology at the University of the Highlands and Islands.

External scholarships and financial support may be available. Contact Orkney College UHI for more information.

Can I progress into further study?

There is a strong archaeological research community on Orkney, which includes Orkney Archaeological Trust, Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA), the offices of the County Archaeologist and the Orkney Museums Service, so you will have every opportunity to develop your research career after completing your Masters degree.
