What is special about this course?

The BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering course is an exciting degree that will equip you with an in-depth engineering knowledge across a broad range of modern aeronautical technologies.

If you have decided on an exhilarating career as an aircraft engineer, this course will provide the knowledge and skills you need to analyse complex aircraft engineering situations and solve aeronautical engineering problems.  The degree offers two pathways which can lead to a career in air transport operations or aircraft design.

Entry requirements

Entry to year 1:

  • 3 Scottish Highers at grade BBC or above, B grade or above required in Mathematics OR
  • 2 A levels at grade C or above, including Mathematics 
  • Plus Physics at Standard grade credit level, National 5 or GCSE at grade B, or equivalent And
  • English at Standard grade credit level, National 5 or GCSE at grade C, or equivalent
  • Applicants with other qualifications or experience will be considered on an individual basis 
  • Students successfully achieving Grade A in the graded unit and greater than 70% in Maths and Physics on the UHI HNC Aircraft Engineering may progress to year two of the degree.

Advanced entry to year 2 may be possible with the following:

  • Successful completion of the HNC in Aircraft Engineering or a related discipline at an appropriate level OR
  • With Advanced Highers or A levels; BBC including Maths and Physics at grade B
  • You will also undertake a period of preparatory tuition which may take the form of a pre-course summer school, or run alongside your year 2 studies

Access routes

Achievement of an average of 70% for a relevant Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) and 70% or above for the SCQF level 6 units, with the exception of Access to engineering where a pass is required:

In May 2016, I was offered the Carnegie Trust Postgraduate Scholarship and I'm now undertaking my MSc in Air Transport Operations and Management while working at Glasgow Airport as a flight dispatcher and gate coordinator. I am an ambassador for women in aviation and STEM and have given numerous careers events presentations and talks promoting aviation, further education, and women in engineering.

Rebekah Watson, graduated with a first class honours in Aircraft Engineering from Perth College UHI. She is now studying on the univeristy's MSc in Air Transport Operations and Management.
