LTA Connect: The development of the virtual residency and international collaborations

This webinar looked at the development of the virtual residency as one which fits into a suite of four residencies which take place during the academic year on the BA Applied Music degree programme. This is a creative project-based learning activity which links up students located at a variety of academic partners throughout the university. The virtual residency experience has been enhanced by the development of international collaboration with other music degree programmes in Australia and in Sweden. Whilst the virtual residency focuses on working in smaller groups facilitated by online technology, the inclusion of the international collaboration provides students with a sense of a wider reach and connectivity and a stimulating dimension to collaboration. The effectiveness of the virtual residency, and how the approach may be adapted within other subjects and disciplines, was explored.
Anna-Wendy Stevenson is the programme leader for the BA Applied Music. Based in the Outer Hebrides for the past 10 years, she has been the driving force behind the development of traditional music courses on the island of Benbecula. Anna-Wendy performs and teaches nationally and internationally, has collaborated with musicians from the folk to classical genres, from Dougie MacLean to Tony Bennett, recorded on over 30 albums and featured on several soundtracks. She been nominated for the MG Alba Composer of the year, and Scottish Music Industry Awards Music teacher of the year. Anna-Wendy is passionate about the possibilities that blended learning models of teaching bring to curriculum design as well as the opportunity for musicians developing a professional career whilst studying.
