- What is email and chat?
Email and chat are services supplied by UHI for UHI staff and students use to communicate easily and safely with each other. - Who uses email and chat?
All staff and students within UHI are able to use GroupWise email and chat to communicate with each other. - Why should I use email and chat?
Email allows fast, inexpensive and efficient communications to take place. Messages can be sent and received regardless of geographical barriers. It allows messages to be sent and forwarded to multiple recipients without the need for retyping. Electronic documents can be distributed via the email system. Within UHI we use Groupwise to provide our email service.Using Groupwise provides the following benefits:
Webmail allows you to access your e-mail or calendar over the Internet from any web-enabled computer in the world.
Access to the email client from myUHI.
Integrated accounts so you don't need to remember multiple passwords.
These accounts are backed up so data can be restored.
GroupWise Messenger is the equivalent of the MSN and AOL instant messenger programs, allowing users to have text 'conversations' with each other, rather than sending a flurry of emails back and fore. You can send messages to any of the people in your contact list, as long as those people are currently online. If the person you wish to contact is not online you will be offered the option to email them instead. You can even have conversations with multiple users at the same time, in much the same as you'd participate in a telephone conference call or video conferencing session. Using GroupWise messenger, rather than MSN messenger for example, offers the following benefits:
Integrates seamlessly with GroupWise and existing network accounts
Build a personal list of useful contacts and know when they're online
Brings a secure messaging environment to UHI, allowing social interaction
All conversations are logged, allowing auditing if required
You should use GroupWise email and chat as these are the only supported formats of email and chat within UHI. Other email providers are not guaranteed to work with our systems.
- When should I use email and chat?
GroupWise email should be used for all college based email communication, as it is the only supported email format. Emails sent from other email providers ie: Hotmail, yahoo etc, cannot be guaranteed to be received, they may be blocked due to inappropriate content from sponsors etc. It should be noted, that email is not an instant communications tool.GroupWise Messenger should be used as again other ‘chat’ sites may be blocked due to issues with the content and GroupWise is the only supported ‘chat’ format within UHI. It also allows you to ask questions and receive and answer immediately, rather than waiting for email to be delivered, read and responded to. You should use GroupWise to contact fellow students and staff regarding coursework, to submit coursework, to respond regarding completed work.
- When is email and chat available?
This service should be available for use 24 * 7, 365 days a year. However there will be times when we need to carryout essential maintenance work, this will be required to address a service fault, or to carryout service improvement work. Whilst we will endeavour to give notice of any work that will require an outage this may not always be possible.
