Q: How do I get help?

If you have problems with the VLE that are not covered in the list below please contact the UHI HelpDesk on 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external).

Q: Blackboard chat does not work

A: Sometimes the chat room opens briefly then closes and appears on the MS Windows Task bar. It usually has a Java coffee cup icon and the words 'Blackboard Chat.' If it is on the Task bar just click its icon. NB: Please don't use another chat service at the same time as using Blackboard chat. If chat is not on the Task bar and you have not already done so, please download the How to get Blackboard working on your PC guide and follow the instructions as your browser must be configured correctly. If you need help please contact the UHI HelpDesk on 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external). Please note that Blackboard works if you log in via MyUHI (Citrix). To login to MyUHI please go to the MyUHI application link at the top of the student homepage. The Citrix login window opens. Enter your user name and password - the same one you use to access Blackboard. Select the VLE folder in 'all programs' and click Blackboard. Blackboard opens in a new window. Login as usual.

Q: The Blackboard discussion board is not working

A: Your browser must be configured correctly. Please download the How to get Blackboard working on your PC guide and follow the instructions. If you need help please contact the UHI HelpDesk on 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external). Please note that Blackboard works if you log in via MyUHI (Citrix). To login to MyUHI please go to the UHI home page and click on Shortcuts, MyUHI. The Citrix login window opens. Enter your user name and password - the same one you use to access Blackboard. Open the VLE folder and click Blackboard. Blackboard will open in a new window. Login as usual.

Q: Blackboard does not seem to work on my computer

A: Your browser must be configured correctly. Please download the How to get Blackboard working on your PC guide and follow the instructions. If you need help please contact the UHI HelpDesk on 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external). Please note that Blackboard works if you log in via MyUHI (Citrix). To login to MyUHI please go to the student homepage and select MyUHI from the applications at the top of the page. The Citrix login window opens. Enter your user name and password - the same one you use to access Blackboard. Open the VLE folder and click Blackboard. Blackboard will open in a new window. Login as usual.

Q: I have logged into Blackboard in this academic year but now I can't get in

A: Your UHI account (including the password you use to log into Blackboard) has a time limit. You have to change your password or you will be locked out of the system. If you log in at a College or Learning Centre the system will asked you if you want to change your password. Always change your password as soon as the system asks you. If you do not do this it will let you log in another 6 times and will then lock you out. If you get locked out you have to ask the Help Desk to reset your password.

If you log in from home you will not be asked to change your password as you do not log in to the same system that is on the College computers. You should log in to GroupWise every three months and change your password. Log into GroupWise using your UHI user id and password. On the toolbar to the right of your Mailbox quota are three small boxes. Click the middle box – options. The Options box opens in a new window. Click the Password tab. In the relevant boxes type your old password and new password twice. Click Save and close the window. If you do this every three months you will not be locked out of Blackboard.

Q: I have studied at UHI before and I can’t login to my new module on Blackboard

A: If you are a returning student please log in to Blackboard using the same id and password that you used before. If you can't remember your password please contact the UHI HelpDesk Tel. 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external).

Q: Is my accessibility software compatible with Blackboard?

A: Blackboard state that they actively pursue adherence to the W3C WAI Web Content, Authoring Tool and User Agent Accessibility Guidelines. See their accessibility statement. Q: I use America Online (AOL) and have problems using Blackboard

If you have a subscription to America Online (AOL) and use the AOL browser you may get an error message or experience problems using Blackboard. Please use the AOL browser to log in to and connect to the Internet. Minimize the AOL browser and open Internet Explorer. Connect to Blackboard using Internet Explorer.

Q: I am trying to use Chat or the Virtual Classroom and I get a message that I can’t connect to Willard

A: When you click the Join button to join Chat or the Virtual Classroom sometimes the Chat or Virtual Classroom opens on your Task bar. You are left looking at as screen that says 'Chat loading' and there is a link to download the Java Plug-in. Please do not click this link as this takes you to another page with a link to Willard.
The first step is check if Blackboard Chat or the Virtual classroom has opened on your Task bar. If it has just click on it and the window opens. Don’t forget to close the window when you have finished.
If it has not opened on the Task bar please follow the instructions in the How to get Blackboard working on your PC guide and check that you have the correct version of Java installed. Then try and Join Chat or the Virtual Classroom. If you still cannot get in please contact the UHI HelpDesk on 150 (internal) / 01463 279 150 (external).
