Seminar to challenge Scottish piracy myths

Seminar to challenge Scottish piracy myths

Professor Steve Murdoch

A free public lecture in Inverness next month will explore the history of Scottish maritime warfare.

Organised by the University of the Highlands and Islands Centre for History, the “Terror of the Seas” seminar will challenge the notion that, due to lax marine policing, Scotland made a disproportionately large contribution to the Golden Age of piracy in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The lecture will be delivered by Professor Steve Murdoch from the Institute of Scottish Historical Research at St Andrews University who has written an award winning book on the subject. It will take place at Inverness College UHI from 5:15pm on Wednesday 1 February.

Dr David Worthington, head of the Centre for History, said: “It will be a great pleasure to welcome Professor Murdoch back to the University of the Highlands and Islands. As former colleagues at the University of Aberdeen, we've worked together a lot over the years and I’ve been fortunate enough to hear him deliver dozens of excellent talks and lectures.”

“Whether it’s brochs, birlinn boats or herring busses, maritime themes are key to understanding the history of the Highlands and Islands region,” Dr Worthington added.
