University of the Highlands and Islands welcomes additional student places

Issued 21 December 2011

Scottish Funding Council indicative funding allocations 2012/13

The University of the Highlands and Islands has been granted over 1000 additional places for 2012/13 for Scottish domiciled students in today's announcement by the Scottish Funding Council.

Welcoming the news, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, James Fraser, said: "This has removed the most immediate constraint on our growth. It means that, more than ever, we are open for business for students and for employers. More young people who would previously have left the region can now study at their own university. In addition, we can accommodate more students from the rest of Scotland who want to learn about our outstanding environment, heritage and culture or prepare themselves for a career in developing industries such as renewable energy."

Mr Fraser continued: "This also means we will be able to expand our work with employers to ensure we are meeting their need for skilled employees and helping the development of local businesses and of the Highlands and Islands economy.

"This is a vote of confidence by Scottish Government and by the Scottish Funding Council in the University of the Highlands and Islands and recognition of the key role we will play in the future success and prosperity of the region, its communities and its people."
