Orkney Tourist Guide Training

Orkney Tourist Guide Training

The Institute has been responsible for the training of tourist guides in Orkney for over 10 years, following the principles of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association.

Training is provided on an occasional basis, there are currently no planned dates for the next course though it is anticipated it will run in autumn 2018.

Contact us if you'd like to be added to our list of interested students for the next course.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for people with a passion for Orkney.  If you’re only interested in doing this for the money then you’d be applying to the wrong course.  If you don’t have a passion for your subject, you won’t make an effective guide.    Guiding and presentation skills can be learned, but passion cannot!

What does it entail?

Although nothing has been decided yet about the next course, this is what we have offered in the past.

We offer the knowledge part of the training before Christmas, with weekly lectures covering a wide range of information about Orkney.  We cannot go into specifics, there isn’t enough time, and there’s too much information!  We expect students to undertake a large amount of independent research and reading.

After Christmas we will combine lectures with practical training, both on the coach and at our sites.  This is a large time commitment, and we will meet twice, sometimes three times every week for between 2 and 4 hours.  You have to be prepared for this (and be prepared to wear almost your entire wardrobe at once, as sometimes we train in very cold conditions!).

When does it usually start?

We usually start around the middle/end of September, and continue until April/May.

When can I start working?

As soon as you have completed the course, and have paid your membership fee to the Scottish Tourist Guides Association - a national membership organisation, internationally recognised for quality.  Your membership fee includes insurance, which is essential.
