Research grant and funding bodies

Below is a comprehensive list of funds that are open long-term, remember funds will tend to have very specific goals and requirements so there is no easy formula for finding funding for a project - this list is intended as a good starting point. On speaking to any organisation listed they may point you in the direction of a more relevant body or fund that covers your specific requirement.

Listed below are the currently opens calls known to us - we will try to update these as we hear any news but it is not intended to be an exhaustive list.

Energy Programme; NSFC Call for Collaborative Research with China on Smart Grids

CLOSING DATE:  29th March 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION

The RCUK Energy Programme wishes to develop collaborative projects between the UK and China in partnership with the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in the field of ‘Smart Grids’ under the following themes.

  • Integration of large Scale Renewables, including HVDC
  • Distribution Network Operation and Planning
  • Scalable flexible power systems operation and control, including risk and uncertainty

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Up to £3M is available across the theme areas from the Energy Programme with matched equivalent resources from NSFC (up to 3M RMB per project). It is expected that between three and four proposals will be funded.

ERA-NET MARTEC II “Maritime Technologies II”

CLOSING DATE:  30th April 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
A call for collaborative R&D project proposals on Maritime Technologies. The call is initiated by funding organisations from 12 European partner countries of the ERA-NET MARTEC consortium.
Research areas include; Shipbuilding, Maritime equipment and services, Ship and port operation, Inland water and intermodal transport, Offshore industry/offshore technology, Offshore structures for renewable energy, Polar technology, Fishing /aquaculture. There are also additional cross priority topics; Safety and Security, Environmental Impact, Human elements

RCUK Energy Programme; End Use Energy Demand (EUED) Research Centres

CLOSING DATE: 15th Feb 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
A call by the EPSRC, ESRC and the RCUK Energy Programme for outline proposals for the formation of RCUK Energy Programme Research Centres in End Use Energy Demand (EUED). EUED is defined as; Energy efficiency measures, reduction in demand for energy and reduction in demand for energy services / mobility - all of which will contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Up to £30m is available. Project partners to be engaged and their contribution to the project should be included in the application. Details of funding (cash or in-kind) expected to be secured should also be provided.

TSB call on smart power distribution and demand (feasibility study)

CLOSING DATE:  22nd Feb 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
A competition to stimulate innovation in power distribution and in management of demand. Proposals are invited that demonstrate innovation in component design, software, implementation, integrated systems and novel business or operational models.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
£2.4m in feasibility study awards. There are two strands to the competition;

  1. feasibility studies of up to four months with grants to £25k.
  2. feasibility studies of between 6 and 12 months with grants to £100k.

Projects in both strands are open to companies of any size but must be led by a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). TSB is primarily looking to support pre-commercial feasibility studies attracting up to 75% public funding.

POWERS (Prototyping for Offshore Wind Energy Renewables Scotland)

CLOSING DATE:  31st March 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
A fund open to Offshore Wind turbine manufacturers from Scottish Enterprise and HIE to support the capital and operation costs associated with the full scale production (not individual component parts) of next generation wind turbine prototypes in Scotland.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A maximum project intervention rate of 45% will in some cases be available or funding support up to a maximum of €7.5m per project.

FP7-ENERGY-2012-2 (DG-ENER) Biofuel

CLOSING DATE:  8th March 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
Renewable fuel production - Area Energy.3.2 Second Generation Fuel from Biomass. Pre-commercial industrial scale demonstration plant on lignocellulosic ethanol (up to 2 projects).

FP7-ENERGY-2012-2 (DG-ENER) Wind

CLOSING DATE:  8th March 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
Area Energy.2.3 Wind - Demonstration of innovative designs to reduce fatigue loads and improve reliability of multi-MW turbines (up to 2 projects).

Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) Doctoral Studentship Programme;  Scottish Energy Research Academy (SERA)

PROPOSAL REVIEW DATES:  23rd Feb 2012, 31st May 2012, 31st August 2012.

FUND DESCRIPTION
An Energy Industry Doctorate Programme in Renewable Energy and Low Carbon Technologies. The programme addresses the strategic demands of industry and government for ‘industry-ready’, post-doctoral researchers to enhance energy industry innovation and knowledge exchange effectiveness. A defining characteristic of the programme is strong industry engagement where companies are co-investors, support project specification and engage with the research directly.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The proposal must show the anticipated sources of funding for the project, likely to be a mix of industry, university and SFC/ETP (e.g. 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 although this may vary). Proposers should assume a 3.5 year studentship and a maximum contribution of £25k per project from the SFC/ETP grant.

Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE)

CLOSING DATE:  8th May 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
Funding projects that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in four areas;

  1. SAVE;  Energy efficiency
  2. ALTERNER;  New and renewable energy resources
  3. STEER;  Energy in Transport
  4. Integrated initiatives

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
€67m across the four areas. Marine Energy; Supporting array technologies

CLOSING DATE:  10th April 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
TSB, Scottish Enterprise and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded collaborative R&D. Business led applied research, experimental development and demonstration of innovative technologies to solve common issues faced in developing and deploying the first marine energy arrays. Six themes;

  1. Tidal array cabling
  2. Subsea electrical hubs
  3. Installation and maintenance vessels for tidal arrays
  4. Navigation and collision avoidance
  5. Anti-fouling and corrosion
  6. Open theme

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Competition opens 5th March 2012. Total fund value £10.5m. Successful projects will generally attract up to 50% public funding, with individual project values ranging between £500k and £1.5m.

TSB “SMART” scheme

CLOSING DATE:  No deadline.

FUND DESCRIPTION
SMART (previously known as Grant for Research and Development) is a TSB scheme offering funding to SMEs to engage in R&D projects in science, engineering and technology. Any UK SME working in any sector can apply. Three types of grants available; Proof of Market, Proof of Concept, Development of Prototype.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Available to single companies.
Proof of market; up to 9 months and max of £25k or 60% of total project cost.
Proof of concept; up to 18months and max of £100k or 60% of total project cost.
Development of Prototype; up to 2yrs and max of £250k or 35% of total project cost.

Northern Periphery Programme (NPP); 9th call and strategic project launch

CLOSING DATE:  2nd May 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
9th call focused on 1) promoting innovation and competitiveness in remote and peripheral areas 2) sustainable development of natural and community resources. Strategic projects focused on 1) renewable energy solutions adapted for remote areas and to the scale of sparsely populated areas 2) responding to climate change in the northern periphery.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Up to 60% funding available. Limited funding available as we near the end of this NPP funding round (98% already allocated). Projects to be between €250k and €1.5m.

Interreg IVA; Cross Border Cooperation

CLOSING DATE:  Stage 1 17th February 2012

FUND DESCRIPTION
Applicants are invited to identify a problem in the cross border territory and demonstrate that this is best addressed through the INTERREG IVA programme.
The call for applications seeks project applications that will contribute to one or both of the following overarching criteria:

  • More efficient delivery of public services
  • Clear and measurable economic impact

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Carbon Trust; Entrepreneurs Fast Track (applied research fund)

CLOSING DATE:  No deadline

FUND DESCRIPTION
A customised package of expert commercial advice, networking opportunities and grant funding to small enterprises that are developing low carbon technologies.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
£3 million to support low carbon technology entrepreneurs. Up to 60% of project funding available.
