Health research activity
Diabetes, lipidomics, genetics and cardiovascular science
The UHI Department of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Science, based at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness, is conducting extensive research, primarily into the causes and consequences of diabetes, but also into a wide range of clinical conditions; most notably cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. The department is also home to the Free Radical Research Facility, and has research expertise in genetics and immunology, and lipidomics.
Rural health
The Centre for Rural Health is a collaborative venture between the University of the Highlands and Islands and the University of Aberdeen, where researchers are working on a range of policy and research projects, focusing on health and care provision in rural communities.
Highland Clinical Research Facility (HCRF)
HCRF provides improved facilities for clinical researchers to encourage greater participation in all forms of clinical research across the Highland region, and is a joint resource between UHI and NHS Highland. Any researcher who requires access to the facilities can make a request for access even if they do not work for UHI or NHS Highland. The HCRF is suitable for health care professionals to undertake commercial or non-commercial clinical research projects and has a bedded unit with the capacity for overnight studies.
