Alexander Mack of Dunoon - a second year BA (Hons) Scottish Cultural Studies student - has been named Argyll College UHI Student of the Year 2011.

Programme leader Dr Innes Kennedy said Alec showed great promise in his academic work and was passionate about the need to recognise and build upon the varying languages, cultures and dialects within Scotland.

In June this year, having successfully secured funding, he attended the XIII International Conference on Minority Languages in Germany - teaching himself German prior to the trip to ensure he could make his voice heard.

Alec is the Argyll representative on UHISA, the university's students' association.
