National Student Survey (NSS)
This national survey asks final year undergraduates about their experience on their course. It runs during February, March and April every year and is administered by Ipsos Mori, an independent market research agency. Survey responses are anonymous.
Who is eligible for the survey?
This is a targeted survey of students in their final year of a 3 or 4 year undergraduate degree and students in the final year of an HND who are eligible to participate. Only targeted students will be contacted to invite them to participate in the survey.
What questions are asked?
The NSS questions were updated in 2017 and as a result the survey now contains 27 multiple choice questions. 10 of these are new questions, most found in three new sections: learning opportunities, learning community and student voice. Some questions were retained from previous years (including the final question "Overall I am satisfied with the quality of my course") while others were removed, or reworded.
What happens to the results?
The university receives a full set of anonymised NSS survey data in July/August. The data is analysed and sent to various committees who use them to plan for the following academic year. Courses who perform below average for 'overall satisfaction' are required to write action plans detailing how they will address students' concerns in the next academic year. You can view brief summaries of the university's NSS results 2016 and NSS results 2017.
How do I get my Amazon voucher?
The university offers a £10 Amazon voucher as an incentive for those completing the National Student Survey online. After completing the survey, students will receive a confirmation email of their survey submission. They should forward this confirmation email on to the university NSS team at email@example.com. Amazon vouchers will then be emailed to that same account within 2-3 working days.
