Scotland's global impact conference
Highland Homecoming – ur beatha dhan dùthaich! is one of the highlights of the Highlands’ contribution to the Homecoming Scotland celebrations. This fortnight-long series of events will explore and celebrate the way Scots have shaped countries and communities around the world.
A highlight of Highland Homecoming is a three day international conference, Buaidh Chruinneil na h-Alba – mar a dh’atharraich aon dùthaich bheag an saoghal! Scotland’s Global Impact – how one small nation changed the world!
22 October (Day one) will focus on the people who made Scotland and early emigration and considers questions such as 'Is Scotland a uniquely mongrel nation...?'
23 October (Day two) sees the focus on why emigrants left Scotland and the imapct of individuals and communities of emigrants and sojourners on thier chosen destinations (mainly in North America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa), the effects of such migration on Scotland itself... and ponders 'whether the best left...?'
24 October (Day three) looks at the Scottish soldier at home and abroad in the 17th - 19th centuries and gives the opportunity to ask questions such as 'Were generations of Highlanders used as cannon-fodder?'
