What is special about this course?UCAS code: F710The exciting BSc (Hons) Marine Science course is set in an area with an enormous wealth of marine and coastal environments. You will examine many of these ecosystems and habitats first-hand, learning how to address global concepts and issues in marine science. You will receive a comprehensive grounding in science during year one. The course becomes extremely flexible in years two to four enabling you to develop your own career path in areas that interest you most. The Honours level allows you to build on your specialist interests and enjoy the more complex issues of marine science. Fieldwork is important throughout the course and you will develop your practical skills through both boat and shore-based practical activities studying a range of marine habitats.

Course contentThis course offers the flexibility to exit at various stages with a valuable qualification. After one year of successful full-time study you will gain a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE), after two years, a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), and after three years a BSc in Marine Science. The fourth year of study gains an Honours degree. Year one explores the basic principles that underlie the components of marine science as well as incorporating a marine field course. Years two and three allow you to choose from a range of modules including marine biology; physical oceanography; marine geology; marine biotechnology; ocean circulation and climate; and sediment processes. Year four requires you to complete a research-based dissertation and choose from a further range of modules including advanced marine technology; behaviour and biomechanics of marine animals; deep sea ecosystems; marine modelling; and polar seas. |
