The UHI network includes a number of research institutions and specialist centres.

These offer a wide range of laboratories, field equipment, specialised archives and study resources. The facilities allow you to undertake challenging study or research in a choice of fields and locations.

Research degrees:
UHI is recognised as a sponsoring establishment for the award of research degrees by the University of Aberdeen. Through UHI you can register on a research degree programme, on a full or part-time basis, leading to the award of MSc, MPhil or PhD.

National excellence:
Designation as a higher education institution in April 2001 enabled UHI to make its first network submission to the 2001 research assessment exercise. We were awarded a grade 4 for our environmental sciences submission – the joint highest grade in Scotland and the fifth highest in the UK.

We are developing other areas of excellence in Gaelic language and culture, learning and teaching, archaeology, social policy studies, mountain studies, theology, and in biochemistry and genetics and diabetes research.
