Orkney offers a rich culture and heritage along with excellent learning opportunities

  • Orkney College UHI was founded in 1995 through a merger of Kirkwall and Stromness Colleges of Further Education.
  • The main Orkney College UHI campus, on the outskirts of Kirkwall, was completed in January 2000 with a further extension opened in 2003.
  • The college originally started out as an Agricultural College.
  • There are approximately 1,500 students at Orkney College UHI each year.
  • Kirkwall is the largest town on Mainland Orkney, with a population of approximately, 7,500.
  • The Pickaquoy Centre is a multi purpose sports facility also based in Kirkwall whilst the newly re-furbished Pier Arts Centre in Stromness (15 miles distant) is a highly popular cultural facility.

Research Centre connections

  • The Institute of Agronomy, a crop research based unit, is based at the college
  • The Centre for Nordic Studies is a newly-established research centre and will, in future, offer research opportunities in the field of Nordic culture, heritage and languages.
