Studio Fàs – Stiùidio FÀS


Studio FÀS is located in the recently completed Fas building at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Sleat, on the Isle of Skye. Its opening, after significant investment and funding, has provided a first class, fully modern, studio at the heart of a lively community and the premier further education institution for television and media studies in the Gaelic language.

Studio FÀS will have a fundamental role in the training and skills development for Gaelic broadcasting and BBC ALBA, offering opportunities and an advantageous learning environment to students like never before. The studio will also serve as a highly useful further base for MG ALBA and in its production of digital content.

Computing facilities


SMO has 3 computer rooms with a total of 33 computers which students have access to 7 days a week. High speed internet and intranet access is available from all work stations, and an array of programmes are available on the network. SMO has copying, and printing accessible to students and internet ports are available in all student accommodation.

Library


The college library provides a relaxed and welcoming environment for students to work in and apart from the library’s extensive lending stock and audio and visual resources, it houses two outstanding collections of antiquarian books, the MacCormick and the Celtica Collections. These collections cover Gaelic, Celtic Studies and Highland Social History and date from the 17th century.

Childcare facilities

Fàs Mòr is a new Gaelic-medium creche facility, providing all day care for children aged 0 to 12. The centre opened in 2004 and is located on the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig campus.


Advising and support


Sheila Hamilton is Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s welfare officer and each student is allocated a Studies Adviser, each of whom is a member of the academic staff. Studies Advisers can be consulted on academic matters relating to the course including the reviewing of academic progress, selection of course options and study methods. If any personal difficulties or requirements for additional support are identified, the Student Services Adviser will assist.
