Make a donation to help current students
The Student Development Fund is designed to offer a little bit of help to our students. Many students get offered exciting opportunities in connection with their course, which will help their personal development, build their knowledge and expand their horizons. Often these opportunities can be missed due to financial constraints - especially in the Highlands and Islands - where travel costs can be dramatically more.
With nearly eight thousand students currently studying at UHI, there is a great demand for this fund. Our university is important for the economy and the region, but most of all for the future of our students and their ambitions.
Students make an application for a grant from the fund, which is administered by the University of the Highlands and Islands Development Trust. The fund was set up with an initial annual grant of over £5,000 thanks to donations made by various individuals and companies. Our long term ambition is to establish a fund of £25,000 which will build up over the years to provide long-term and continuing support for students.
We would like to help as many students as possible achieve their goals and have the best experience they can at the University of the Highlands and Islands. In order to do this, we need financial help from our friends, supporters and you, our alumni.
Many students have already benefited, read about how some of them have used their awards.
In 2016, the University of the Highlands and Islands Development Trust was formally wrapped up. This involved transferring all of its assets and liabilities to the University of the Highlands and Islands. this was done as the Trust was set up many years before the University gained title in 2011. As such the Trust was able to operate under the title of "University of the Highlands and Islands Development Trust", a privilege not available to the, then, UHI Millennium Institute. With the University having gained title, this separation is no longer necessary.
Although the Development Trust has formally wrapped up, your support is still very much appreciated. So you may still make a donation if you wish.
Maximise the impact of your gift.
If you are a UK taxpayer, your gift can be worth almost a third more, at no extra cost to you. Currently, we can claim 25p on every pound you give in tax relief, plus we will receive a government supplement of an extra 3p on every pound. A donation of £100 is worth £125 to the university.
Gift Aid can apply to donations of any amount, large or small, made by cash, cheque, standing order, debit or credit card.
You must pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that we reclaim on your donations in the tax year. If you pay tax at the higher rate you can claim further tax relief on your Self-Assessment tax return.
