Student engagement

You can engage with students from the University of the Highlands and Islands in a number of ways to fulfill your skills and employee needs. These include :

• Student Work Placement or Internship
  A period of time a student spends in the workplace as an assessed component of their studies, normally related to their academic discipline.  Student work placements can last from a minimum of 2 weeks to one year and can be undertaken on a part-time or full-time basis.  National minimum wage legislation applies unless the placement provider falls within the definition of a charity, voluntary organisation, an associated fund raising body or a statutory body.
  Student work placements are supported by a named placement co-ordinator who will work with the employer to scope the placement and can if required help to facilitate the recruitment process.  The co-ordinator will remain in contact throughout the placement, and will visit the student and the employer to review progress.
• Student Work Experience
  An unsupported period of time a student spends in the workplace not directly connected to their studies or an accredited module or programme.
• Work Shadowing
  Where a student observes a member of staff working in an organisation, in order to gain a better understanding of what a particular job entails, activity is typically unpaid and offered on a short-term basis i.e. a minimum of 3 – 5 days
• Employer-generated Student Project
  Where an employer provides a student with a brief for an identifiable project, often requiring specific knowledge or skills.  Student projects can be undertaken either individually or on a group basis and do not entail the student or students being based on the employers premises.  Projects are supported by lecturing staff and can be paid or unpaid.
• Volunteering
  An unsupported period of time that as student spends on an activity which aims to benefit society or the environment.  Volunteering is an activity undertaken of a student’s own free will and with no remuneration
• Graduate Internship
  A period of work-experience undertaken by a student on graduation, normally on a full-time basis and lasting for a minimum of 6 months to 1 year. Graduate Internships are usually offered on a fixed term basis and subject to national minimum wage legislation.
