What is special about this course?
The Additional Teaching Qualification (ATQ) in Computing Studies is aimed at secondary teachers in Scotland who want to gain the university credits required to register to teach Computing Studies as a second subject.
This course provides the knowledge and skills to teach Computing Studies at all curricular levels. Working, learning and collaborating with a group of fellow teaching professionals provides a great opportunity to share experience and develop an ongoing support network. You will be mentored by current computer studies teachers. Although the focus of the course will be on computing skills, you will be encouraged to explore teaching methodologies and to develop and share learning activities, resources and ideas to put these into practice.
- The course is delivered online so you can fit your study around your personal and professional commitments
- Online discussion boards allow interaction with fellow students, tutors and peer-review submitted work
- Induction and tutorials are facilitated through webinars and other online software
- Course materials and assignments are designed to allow you to develop a range of teaching materials and objects that can be shared with fellow students and used in the classroom
- You will be part of an ongoing peer group of students that support each other and keep learning materials current to allow school pupils the most up-to-date experience and information in Computing Studies
- This course is designed for secondary teachers who wish to add a second subject to their teaching registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
- To complete registration for computing studies as a second subject you will be required to apply to the GTCS. You will then be asked to complete a specified number of days of teaching Computing Studies in school to complete full registration.
- We recommend that you explore teaching options for computing studies prior to applying for the course.
This course is designed as a part-time, rolling programme with one module being offered each semester. You will complete two of the following modules in year one:
- Website design and development
- Database design and development
- Software design and development
- Computer systems
In year two, you must choose the remaining two modules from those listed in year one (one per semester).
How will I study my course?
Part Time (Structured)
You will study through a combination of video conference lectures and tutorials and online study via the university's virtual learning environment (VLE), with support from your tutors. You will also participate in scheduled tutor-led activities and discussions, facilitated through virtual classroom technology.
