The modern design engineer in the electrical and electronic engineering sector needs more than just subject knowledge and problem-solving ability. In today’s multi-disciplinary industry, with integrated project teams, it is necessary to appreciate how individual responsibilities blend into a systems approach to design.
At the heart of this BEng (Hons) is the engineering design process from conceptual design to deployment and disposal. This starts in year one with a self-contained project (such as Engineers Without Borders) that introduces you to the full project lifecycle. From second year, your skills will be expanded through a vertically-integrated project where you will get experience of various roles and increasing responsibility as you progress through the years. You will also be able to demonstrate your own engineering ability on complex individual projects, chosen to match your career aspirations or to demonstrate your adaptability.
Core to the philosophy of this course is its multi-disciplinary nature. By working on applications from deep sea to deep space you will be able to use your expertise and knowledge and your ability to manage system-level design to evaluate a problem and formulate a solution.
This course has been designed in conjunction with industry and is delivered by academics with extensive engineering experience so that you will graduate with the skills, both technical and personal, needed by the modern engineering sector.

You will learn through a combination of face-to-face lectures and tutorials, practical work in engineering and computing laboratories and workshops, and online study via the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE).
For students normally domiciled in Scotland or the European Union/EEA (outside of the UK) and with a term time address in Scotland, the following fees apply:

A no fee increase guarantee is available for self-funding full-time and structured part-time RUK and International undergraduate students for continuous and contiguous study for the same award, up to the permitted standard time limit for the relevant award.

As such it will provide you with both the subject-matter knowledge and the broader transferable skills needed to function in your career of choice. As a design engineer with an appreciation of industrial practice and demonstrated ability to work in a complex team, and on your own, you will be at home across the whole engineering sector, whether your interests lie in energy, transport, oil and gas, aerospace or wherever. You will have the chance to explore opportunities that may reinforce your choice of career, but you will also experience a range of applications that may challenge your preconceptions, and open your eyes to different possibilities.
The course incorporates all of the content specified by the Engineering Council as required to comprise partial educational requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. As such it is the perfect start to your engineering career, which you will then complement with either an appropriate Masters degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD) accredited by a professional engineering institution, or appropriate further learning to Masters level, and the necessary industrial experience and responsibility to achieve registration.
As a new course it is not yet accredited by the Engineering Council. This requires the course to have run for its full duration before evidence can be submitted to gain accreditation. However, once accredited, this is backdated to include all students who have taken the course prior to accreditation.
Students who perform well on the BEng - achieving required grades in specific modules - in any year of the course may be eligible to transfer to the MEng Engineering Design (5-year integrated Masters programme), including on successful completion of the BEng (Hons) with an upper second class honours.
