What is special about this course?
This course is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding of the role of the dental care professional in caring for the child patient in a team model of care. It is designed to enhance your approaches to learning and help you to become an investigative learner who is able to critically appraise the evidence-base relating to the treatment of oral disease in the child patient, to inform and reflect upon your own clinical practice.
Through reflection in a clinical setting, you will investigate the outcomes of different approaches to treatment that will benefit all patients in your care. You will investigate the cause of disease, prevention, and how the dental team approaches treatment.
- The course is delivered completely online allowing you the flexibility to fit your studies around your personal and professional commitments
- You will have access to a personal academic tutor who will support you throughout your learning
- You will be able to communicate with tutors and other students through our virtual learning environment (VLE)
- The course is directly related to the clinical work of the therapist, but will also be of interest to others including dentists
- You will gain a recognised qualification that demonstrates the application of clinical understanding and knowledge at postgraduate level, meeting CPD requirements for the regulator (General Dental Council, GDC), and potentially aiding professional progression
- A relevant degree such as an ordinary or honours degree in oral health science, Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDA), MChD or BChD Dental Surgery, or Diploma in Dental Therapy
- You must also be working in a clinical setting or have worked clinically within the last 2 years

- Aetiology and determinants of oral disease in the child
- Risk assessment for child patients
- Impacts of general health and additional needs
- Identify contributing factors including management of dental fear and anxiety
- Targeted preventive approaches for child patients informed by structured risk assessments
- Evidence-informed approaches to treatment considering risks, benefits and the perception and preference of parents and children
- Treatment planning in a team model
- Assessment and management of dental fear and anxiety, pain management
- Practical approaches to treatment in a team model of provision of dental care
- Monitoring and evaluation of treatment outcomes
- Recognising and addressing success and failure
- Identifying the reflective practitioner
- Practical reflective tools and practices
- Evaluation of learning
How will I study my course?
- Part-time (structured)
- You will study through supported online learning using the university's virtual learning environment (VLE)
- The module is delivered over 16 weeks, the final 2 weeks being dedicated to assessment completion
How long will my course last?
- You will study for one semester (16 weeks) at 20 hours per week

Where can I study my course?
This course is delivered fully online, including video conference lectures and tutorials. You can study from your home location anywhere in the UK. However, you will be enrolled and get support from staff at the above campus.
