What is special about this course?
This course is designed to facilitate a process for individuals who want to become professional counsellors and psychotherapists through education and practice. Year one of the course will provide successful students with a CPD Award in Counselling Skills (including COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills). To become a qualified counsellor or psychotherapist you will need to complete a further two years of study and practice gaining the Diploma in Higher Education in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. Progression to year two will be by application and selection interview.
- There is a residential early in the course to allow you to meet fellow students.
- The diploma includes a practice placement element of 100 hours of counselling practice.
- On qualifying, trainee counsellors can apply for Counsellor Membership with Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland (COSCA).
- Entry to year one, UHI CPD Award in Counselling Skills, you will be required to complete a short written piece of work (500 words) on 'What can I bring to a counselling skills course?' and attend a group interview, taking part in an experiential exercise.
- Successful applicants will be required to complete a PVG Disclosure Check and become PVG Scheme Members in order to undertake this course.
- On successful completion of the above award, progression to year two will be by application and interview.
Advanced entry to year 2:
- Direct entry to year 2 may be possible for those who already have a COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills.
Year 1 - CPD Award
Part-time study, modules include:
- Counselling Skills Approach
- Introduction to Theoretical Perspectives
Year 2 - DipHE
Part-time study, modules in year two include:
- Ethical and Professional Issues in Counselling Module
- Foundations of Research
- Person-Centred Advanced Skills and Theory
Year 3 - DipHE
Full-time study and practice, modules in year three include:
- Placement Practice (a total of 100 hours practice on placement with supervision)
- Other counselling Approaches and Models of Psychopathology
If students have not completed the required 100 hours practice there is provision for additional time to complete in semester one of the following academic year.

You will learn through a combination of face-to-face college attendance one day per week and online study via the UHI Virtual Learning Environment.

- Part-time (structured): 3 years - 2 years part-time study plus 1 year full-time study and practice

For students normally domiciled in Scotland or the European Union/EEA (outside of the UK) and with a term time address in Scotland, the following fees apply:
|Year 1: Part-time 40 credits||£430|
|Year 2: Part-time 80 credits||£860|
|Year 3: Full-time 120 credits||£1285|
Eligible Scottish/EU students can apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for tuition fee support for the part-time (part-time fee grant) and full-time study periods.
What can I do on completion of my course?
Qualified professional counsellors/psychotherapists can market themselves as private practitioners. There are opportunities to work for Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Providers and part-time positions within Health Centres for GPs.
