What is special about this course?

The HNC Applied Sciences (Pathway to Medicine) course is a unique partnership between Perth College UHI and the University of St. Andrews that could help you realise your ambition of becoming a doctor.

On successful completion of the HNC you could progress to the six-year medical course at the University of St. Andrews Medical School.

You will learn the scientific theory and gain the practical experience and people skills necessary to prepare you for the demands of medical training.

  • One-year, full-time course to lead into the six-year medical course at the University of St. Andrews

Entry requirements

  • 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above  Or
  • 1 A level at grade D or above
  • The Higher or A level must be in one of the following scientific subjects: Biology, Human Biology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry Or
  • An A pass on an Access to Science programme that includes a pass (A, B or C) in a science-based Higher or equivalent
  • Applications will be considered from those who have already studied at post-school level up to SCQF Level 7 (eg HNC qualification) and on exceptions, up to SCQF Level 8 (eg HND qualification).
  • You should demonstrate a clear interest and commitment to pursuing a career in Medicine and satisfy the Medical Fitness to Practice regulation.
  • You must be a UK or EU citizen and normally have left school at least four or more years prior to application

Year 1 - HNC

Mandatory units are:

  • Information Technology: Applications Software 1
  • Quality and Health & Safety Systems in Science Industries
  • Presentation Skills in Science
  • Fundamental Chemistry: Theory and Practice
  • Applied Sciences: Graded Unit 1

Optional units may include:

  • Human Body Structure and Function
  • Microbiology: Theory and Practice
  • Cell Biology: Theory and Practice
  • DNA Structure and Function
  • Mathematics for Science 1
  • Fundamental Concepts of Organic Chemistry
  • Fundamental Chemistry: An Introduction

Fees are payable in advance each academic year unless otherwise agreed.
