Lews Castle College UHI music student Ewan McNeill travelled from Northern Ireland to Uist to realise his ambition of becoming a professional musician.

Living so far from home, however, resulted in a real squeeze on his finances but a scholarship grant ensured the only thing he'll be squeezing in future is his new accordion!

The talented musician needed the new instrument to take his playing to the required new level to pursue a full time career in future.

Coming from Northern Ireland already put Ewan at a disadvantage financially compared to Scottish students, so the scholarship helped him to focus his money on the things he needed to complete his BA in Applied Music.

Ewan McNeill

"A new accordion is very expensive, and something as a student I would not have been able to afford on my own - so getting a scholarship really helped me achieve my goal of becoming a professional musician."
