Gillian Mucklow

Canadian national Gillian Mucklow already speaks three languages – English, French and Spanish – but now has an ambition to teach Gaelic after learning her fourth.

The desire to become a Gaelic medium teacher in Scotland started when she completed an online language course at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI, while continuing to work full time as a registered nurse on a hospital acute medical floor.

As an international student now pursuing a BA (Hons) in Gaelic and Education, Gillian needs to augment her earnings from part-time work - so gaining a scholarship gave her more time for language studies and also allowed her to participate more in university life.

“Without sufficient funding I would have had to return to Canada to obtain a teaching degree - but I wanted to contribute to the Gaelic language and I believe I can best achieve this goal as a teacher.”
