  • Quiet room, well-lit and ventilated
  • Adjustable chair so that forearms are kept roughly horizontal when using the keyboard and mouse
  • Table/desk, big enough to hold the computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse. It must be big enough to allow the keyboard to be placed in a comfortable position and for the mouse to be used with a relaxed arm and straight wrist
  • If taking a timed assessment: clock with alarms. If possible, set three alarms, one 1/2 hour before the end of the exam, one 10 minutes and one 5 minutes before the end of the exam, allowing time to submit
  • Curtains or blinds that can be adjusted to prevent glare on the monitor
  • Monitor adjusted so that the top of the screen is at eye level
  • Is everything turned off that could be distracting while completing the online assessment? E.g. mobiles in airplane mode, e-mail, instant messaging, Twitter, Facebook etc off.


  • Computer or laptop and monitor that complies with UHI minimum specifications. See recommended minimum computer specifications on the Buying your own device page.
  • Standard keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Headset and webcam, if required
  • If using a laptop: fully charged and running on main power


  • A reliable Internet connection
    Note: if you are using wifi to connect to your home router, to improve the connection, try plugging an Ethernet cable into the router and connecting it to your computer. Ethernet cables are often supplied with the router or can be purchased online.
  • An absolute minimum of 2.4MB/s upload and download broadband speed, the higher the better. Test broadband connection by using the speedcheck test at the bottom of the Buying your ​own device page. Broadband speeds are variable depending on the time of day.
