The birds and the bees

Can you identify all the birds and insects on our display? Some are very unusual. Come and spend some time making a badge and looking at how insects are important in your garden.  View some of the more common insects in detail using or microscope linked to a computer or a hand held magnifying glass.

Then design your own garden 'beastie' and put it on a badge that you make yourself.

Getting to know trees inside and out

Come along to the Scottish School of Forestry to find out how science and technology are used to assess and monitor trees and timber. Try your hand at measuring tree height and counting tree rings, listen to the sounds made by different logs (when you tap them with a hammer…) and see how we can use sound waves to detect decay in tree stems.

2:00pm - 3:00pm – Older Children’s session:  a more interactive session but  also with a dinasaur theme.

A host of activities with a paper theme in the upstairs area of Waterstones book store. Just how far can you make a paper airplane fly? Or is there any other ways you can make interesting objects out off folded paper.

At Tiso's we thought we would introduce a mountain focus. So it is mountain version of 'How do you measure up?' and you can take a look at  what type of chocolate makes the best 'oil reservoir'.


The  University of the Highlands and Islands STEM team present their concept of the CREST Chest. Interactive STEM club boxes for primary and secondary school science clubs.  Come along and try the activities out, give us feed back on what is successful  Are you a teacher? Come and tell us what you think should be in a box.

Bookable Raspberry Pi sessions (45 minutes for each).  SCDI have organised  Raspberry Pi and Code Bug workshop.  There  are three sessions consist of three exciting activities on programming with Raspberry Pi :

  • How to make a Tweety Pi
  • Burping Jelly baby
  • How to use a Code bug

The sessions have a limited number of spaces so booking is essential via Eventbrite.
