Professor Frank Rennie, Professor of Sustainable Rural Development and Assistant Principal at Lews Castle College UHI, gives a quick tour of how the emergence of open digital resources and globally connected hyper-interactivity is changing the way that we are able to provide educational experiences for learners of all ages. Contrary to the language hyperbolae of “digital natives” and disagreements over whether face-to-face or online provides a better learning experience, he argues that that the spread of an open, digital architecture of open educational resources is ushering-in a new age of public enlightenment.

Presenter bio

Frank Rennie is Professor of Sustainable Rural Development at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland and is Assistant Principal at Lews Castle College UHI. He is the Programme Leader for the online MSc in Sustainable Rural Development, and tutors mainly postgraduates and research students. His research interests lie in new approaches to online education and the benefits of networking for sustainable rural development. He has been an advisor to several government bodies and is a Fellow of a number of learned societies. Frank has been involved in developing and delivering various combinations of distributed learning (particularly networked digital solutions for rural areas) with a wide range of international partners. He has published a diverse range of resources related to rural issues, including over 29 books, most recently the “E-learning and Social Networking Handbook” and “How to write a research dissertation”.
