Biography

Dr Tom McCallum has a first class honours degree from the University of Edinburgh. He went on to complete his PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2006. His doctorate “Understanding how knowledge is used in ant algorithms” looked at the added value evolutionary inspired algorithms added to common search problems.

After his PhD he went into Fintech, working on a range of AI inspired trading systems for several hedge funds. In 2012 he moved to develop a new analytics platform for a boutique consultancy looking at Social Care portfolios. In 2015, he changed direction and entered Capgemini to gain experience of a large Corporate firm. Entering as a Unix Engineer, he quickly become team lead and then level lead. In 2016 he joined the management staff at the Infrastructure Management Operations Centre (IMOC).

In 2018, seeking to re-enter Academia, he joined Moray College UHI to help lead the development of the University of Highlands and Islands’ new Software Development course for launch in 2020.

Research groups and interests

Current research interests include a variety of AI topics including Deep Learning, Search and a computational theory of intelligence.
