Open seminar series: The Victorian Rune Enthusiasts 15/10
The Centre for Nordic Studies open seminar series continues this winter with some public lectures by our local CNS staff. The first one is by Dr Ragnhild Ljosland on the 15th October at 7.30 pm.
"The Victorian Rune Enthusiasts in Orkney and America" looks at the excitement caused in Orkney by the opening of Maeshowe in 1861, and the controversy around the (fake!) Kensington Rune Stone from Minnesota in 1898 and onwards. What these two stories share is a deep rooted enthusiasm for runic writing and a search for the ethnic roots of a local community.
Time: Wed 15th October at 7.30 pm
Place: Centre for Nordic Studies, Kiln Corner, Kirkwall
No booking necessary, free entry.
