Access to Tour Guiding in Orkney

The need for step-on guides on cruise ship tours has become apparent for the 2023 season, and this intensive 8-week training course seeks to address that issue.

Your requirements:

There will be a large time commitment required from you over the course of the programme, not only the in-person training, but also from self-study. 

  • You must be computer literate enough to be able to access the online resources. You do not need to own a computer as you may use Orkney College systems.
  • £75.00
  • You will be invoiced by Orkney Islands Council after the commencement of your studies.

Cost: 

The course covers:

  • All practical sessions with professional and experienced guides on site and in a bus.
  • Mentoring time to support you during the course.
  • Demonstration coach tour(s).
  • Access to extensive course materials online via a Virtual Learning Environment.

Dates: 

There will be a single introductory evening session to those who have signed up on Wednesday 29th March to introduce the course and explain the systems involved.  In-person tour guide training will be all dayeach Saturday (noted below) from 1st of April to the 27th of May, with the exception of Saturday 8th April (Easter weekend).

Training:

This course runs over 8 weekends between 1st April – 27th May.   You will be coached in tour guiding skills and etiquette in a minibus and on a site on a single – but lengthy – route.  You will be given access to considerable training resources online.  You will be invited to a dedicated Facebook group which will become your community into the future.   You will be given access to extensive information via a Google map into the foreseeable future.

Examination:

There is no exam, you will be continually assessed throughout your training.

Qualification:

You will gain a Workplace Core Skill – Numeracy at SCQF5.  The credit from this course is fully transferrable to other FE and HE courses within Scotland.
