Institute for Northern Studies
Rebecca is working on a PhD at the Institute for Northern Studies with the title “Words and Waves: a dialogical approach to discourse, community, and Marine Renewable Energy in Orkney”. She previously completed an MLitt in Highlands and Islands Literature at INS, and a BA(Hons) in English Language and Literature with the Open University.
In her role as postgraduate representative on the executive committee of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE-UKI) Rebecca was responsible for organizing the 2018 ASLE-UKI postgraduate conference in Orkney. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Orkney International Science Festival (OISF) as part of Rebecca’s SGSAH funded internship with OISF.
Rebecca’s research is interdisciplinary and is grounded in a passion for the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and his dialogical approach to language. From this Rebecca has developed ecological dialogism - an approach to understanding language and meaning making as an embodied process, enacted within a physical and cultural environment. Rebecca has a particular interest in the role of narrative in shaping cultural identity in Orkney, and the relationship between local texts and everyday discourse. Her work engages with the Environmental Humanities and feminist approaches to science and technology, energy and environment.
