Inverness College runs a number of CPD courses tailored to those working in freshwater fisheries management and freshwater environment monitoring industries. These include :

Introduction to Electrofishing

Every person carrying out electrofishing should attend this 3 day course. This course aims to highlight the health and safety aspects of electrofishing. The correct methods of electrofishing with a back pack and generator system are taught and practised in the field as well as reinforcing the health and safety. Fish identification and processing fish are taught and practised as well as setting stop nets.

Course Content

  • Day 1 – First Aid training
  • Day 2 – All day training
  • Day 3 – Practical assessment whilst off site

Electrofishing Team Leader

To ensure that those in charge of an electrofishing team are competent at leading a team, and using the SFCC protocols for electrofishing procedures and recording data. This 2 1/2 day course builds on the skills and knowledge gained from in the introductory course and experience in the field.

Outdoor First Aid including Emergency First Aid at Work

This course aims to prepare any person who will be more than 30 minutes from a medical establishment or outside assistance to provide ongoing patient care.  This is suitable for outdoor workers, teachers leading field trips, walking/rambling/climbing clubs, cadet and scout leaders, outdoor instructors needing to validate governing body awards, forestry workers, rangers, wardens, gillies and anybody on a gap year expedition.  Commercial organisations may have a care of duty for their employees and for anybody participating in an outdoor activity, this course will allow the duty of care to both groups to be met.

Work based qualifications in Fisheries Management & Aquaculture

Inverness college developed SVQ level 2 and 3 qualifications in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture. As well as the full SVQ, individual units may be taken as work based modules.
