Grants and Contracts
Grants & Contracts supports research activity across all subjects, working with researchers and administrative staff throughout the partnership as well as interfacing with external agencies including other universities, funding bodies and private companies at national and international levels.
We support commercial research initiatives in addition to academic research studies, manage applications to the Innovation Voucher Scheme and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Also, we offer advice on identifying suitable research funding opportunities (see also the university's Research Funding pages). We welcome enquiries related to all our areas of work, and, if we don't actually know the answer to something, we will almost certainly be able to point you in the right direction.
Grants and Contracts should be your first port of call if you are considering undertaking a research project.
It is especially important to contact us at an early stage if you wish to make a university funding application.
We support the development and submission of grant proposals to many funding bodies, including the Research Councils, EU Programmes such as H2020, NPA etc., societies and charitable trusts, and industry.
If you wish to make a funding application to support a research project, we will assist with such things as, for example:
- Confirming whether the university is eligible to apply to a particular funder or funding programme
- Steering the application through the internal authorisation process
- Setting up communication paths with funders and project partner counterparts
- Costing out your project
- Completing the application form
- Gathering supporting documentation
- Quality checking your application
- Arranging for relevant sign off
- Ensuring the application is submitted by the deadline
Our Guide to Research Funding Applications is designed to assist researchers with various aspects of developing funding proposals.
Inevitably, successful research funding applications result in contracts - at the very least, award letters in some form. Very often, awards need to be followed up with other contractual arrangements, such as partnership, consortium or collaboration agreements, consultancy contracts, confidentiality or non-disclosure agreements; whatever is necessary to set out formally and have agreed the arrangements governing the management of a project.
Agreements will very often be legally binding and it is vital they be dealt with correctly. We have significant experience and expertise in this area, and are responsible for writing and/or negotiating - and recommending for sign off - the terms of all such agreements to which the university is party. Each project will require contractual arrangements, which can be complex, to be tailored accordingly, therefore it is vital that award holders liaise with us to ensure effective handling of the exercise.
Our Guide to Research Grant Awards helps explain what happens next and the things you need to do once you have received notification that your application has been successful.
We are responsible for liaising with all of those involved in projects to ensure successful outcomes whilst delivering on time and to budget.
We do this by maintaining contact with project staff and funding bodies, project partners and other external agencies as relevant. We help to ensure that funders receive the outputs they require, assist principal investigators to solve any problems or address issues which may arise whilst their project is ongoing, and work to ensure that the university’s contractual and legal obligations are fulfilled.
