The University of the Highlands and Islands is the United Kingdom’s leading integrated university encompassing both further and higher education. Based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, our distinctive partnership of 13 independent colleges and research institutions is locally based and rooted in communities, but with national and international reach, as part of a regional university structure.

To support our work we are recruiting to the following role:

Teaching Assistant (x2)

Salary range £25 per hour
Durationsix months
Working hoursvariable
LocationHome based
Closing DateWednesday 18 August 2021

The Centre for History, part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), seeks to employ two Teaching Assistants on fixed contracts during 2021-2. The postholders will be each expected to teach, and assess work, in the areas of medieval and early modern Scottish, British and European history.

Your work will involve leading seminar-style discussions by video-conference with students, sessions which will be taught from home or, optionally, and should it prove feasible in the light of COVID, from a UHI Academic Partner college. You should expect to teach across a wide chronological and geographical range.

You will be expected to have some previous experience of university-level teaching, to be at postdoctoral level, and will be paid at an hourly rate, this covering preparation, lecturing, marking and administration on the range of relevant modules.

Candidate Requirements

The minimum requirements for selection are as follows:

  • PhD in hand, preferably in History
  • a good knowledge of the field and experience in teaching
  • and willingness to embrace a wide range of teaching and assessment methods

UHI (www.uhi.ac.uk) comprises a network of academic partner colleges across the north and west of Scotland, and, thus, although postholders will normally teach by video link, they may be required, from time to time, to attend meetings at the Centre’s host college in Dornoch.

Interviews will be held on Tuesday 28 September 2021.

If you have any queries about the application process please contact the Personnel Office at personnel@uhi.ac.uk or on 01463 279239.
