What does your job involve?
As the owner of an online marketing company, C4 Compete, my role includes everything from business development to marketing, sales, operation, finance and just about anything else you can think of. My job is to help small businesses achieve strategic long-term sustainable success through online education, workshops and 'done-for-you' social media management.
What did you study at the University of the Highlands and Islands and how does it relate to your current job?
I was very fortunate to study my B.A. (Hons) Business Management at the University of the Highlands and Islands, through Perth College. This education enabled me to start my own business without any finance or resources, and it also provided a structural foundation from which I have grown. A lot of the work I do now for small business clients worldwide can be directly tied back to the education I received through the University of the Highlands and Islands.
How did you get into your job?
After graduating, I knew I needed experience so I used social media to secure as much unpaid experience as I could. While I was doing that, I applied for as many jobs as there were available. After about two months, having been unsuccessful in securing work, I decided then and there that I was going to start a business, so I did. My education allowed me to sell the knowledge I'd gained while leveraging social media and relationship marketing, helping me to secure my first few clients. From there the business has continued to grow and develop. I'm very fortunate that the skills and knowledge I gained through university gave me a springboard to creating a life I'm truly passionate about living.
Where would you like to go with your career in the future?
I'd like to continue to grow and develop my business around my passions and to serve my clients in the best way I can. A huge part of this will be to continue to expand the online education side of the business. The course I completed though the University of the Highlands and Islands has allowed me to live my dream and I intend to take full advantage of that.
Do you have any advice for current students?
I think it is very important to start to understand who you are as a person and what your core strengths are. Become really self-aware and then leverage what you know to start building up your own personal brand now. Be unapologetically you, go with your passions and try to realise the huge opportunity your education is providing. It's the foundation of your future career success.
