Lews Castle College UHI Student of the Year

Christian Gamauf

Christian arrived in Scotland four years ago and developed significantly during his studies.  His written and spoken work has developed to a very high academic standard and his essays earned him distinction in all modules last year.  He came to Scotland to study HNC Music from Austria and is now in the third year of his BA Applied Music degree.  Ambitious for his future, Christian has chosen to study on the Erasmus programme at the University of Cape Breton to broaden his knowledge of Scottish traditions through dance and fiddle music.

Christian made a significant contribution to the student community, not just at Lews Castle College in Benbecula, but across the University of the Highlands and Islands network.  Christian has been a continuous support and inspiration to his fellow students and staff and made it his business to recognise the students locally who have required additional support.  He organised regular performance and music workshop tours to Austria taking with him a variety of fellow students.

Christian is also developing a reputation in the professional Scottish music world for being a reliable, professional and magnanimous musician.  He was awarded a place on the Fèis Rois Ceilidh Trail each year while on his course, and was involved in a big performance at the Hydro in Glasgow Celtic Connections 2014.  He was also selected to participate in the Fèis Rois Gala Concert with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, featuring other musicians from Australia and performed at the festival Arcu Atlánticu in Astrurias, Northern Spain, as part of the Albastur Cultural Exchange.
