“In 2018 I was delighted to hear I had been awarded funding from the Elite Athlete Fund. I am a HNC Health, Fitness & Exercise student and I’m an international karate athlete. I compete in kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) at international and world level and was selected to represent Scotland at the 2018 karate world championships hosted in Dundee. Competing at this level requires a great deal of commitment and investment in time and money. I regularly have to travel to Inverness for training and specialist seminars and the funding has enabled me to make more trips for squad training at our head dojo (training centre). There are also costs associated with competition entry, travel and accommodation. The Elite Athlete Fund helped reduce the stress associated with booking and arranging travel and accommodation.”

“Thanks to the Elite Athlete fund I was able to continue with my studies in Bsc Sport and Fitness and gain my degree, I was able to work less as I had this extra money to help with some of the costs. Living in the North of Scotland to continue to compete at this level, I must travel to all major competitions and this takes quite a lot of money. I am looking forward to competing for the University of the Highland and Islands once again next year at the Scottish Universities and the International and possibly British Universities again.”

“This award helped me achieve my dream of playing for Great Britain at an international level. To be able to play American Football internationally was a big goal of mine and at first, I figured it was not possible, due to the lack of teams/ interest within Scotland and the general cost of the travelling. I would not have been able to complete this fantastic opportunity or represent Great Britain if it wasn’t for this funding, and I greatly urge anyone who has the same hopes and dreams to apply.”

Henry Stephen, Moray College UHI Student

“Through the fund helping support me I was able to attend various away event such as London, Coventry and our largest competition in Cardiff. The funding allowed me to secure hotels, flights and my entry costs for these various competitions and also allowed me to compete in more divisions than normal, therefore allowing me to gain more competition experience and expand my knowledge. I had an amazing year picking up a total of 2 blackbelt senior grand champions, 10 golds, 3 silvers and 5 bronze medals. Without this support I wouldn’t have been able to balance my study and training, enter so many divisions and attend as many away events.”

“Due to the funding I received, I was able to work less and spend more time on my studies as well as playing golf representing the university. From this I was able to achieve an upper second class honours degree and an A grade in my dissertation. In terms of golf, I have had my most successful year on the British University golf tour. This year played a huge part in not only my personal and academic development but my development as a golfer and this was only enhanced by the support I received from the Elite Athlete Fund.”
