From South Uist to Australia: meet our alumni of the year!

Chloe Steele is a fantastic example of the value, inspiration and impact that studying with UHI can offer. She is the first person from the Outer Hebrides to graduate with the full honours degree in applied music, studying from home. Her latest album, 'Calum Beag's Cèilidh' was funded through business sponsorship and features members of the community. You can download the album online now, with all proceeds going to the Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative, in memory of her partner's late father.

Chloe said: “Recognition of my hard work, passion and dedication to my culture and community through this award is truly humbling and rewarding... The opportunities I have received through studying with UHI have been life changing. They have provided me with the chance to value and appreciate my culture on a personal, deep and meaningful level.

Dr Graham Hannaford was one of the first students on our MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands when it was launched in 2011, and he studied online from his home in Australia. He went on to complete the degree in 2015, achieving a range of distinction level marks. Graham has remained a champion of the Centre for History, maintaining strong contacts, and has assisted with connections into Scottish diaspora in Australia.

Graham said: “I am excited because this award provides recognition of the global reach of UHI and, in particular, the efforts of the Centre for History to engage with a community which knows no geographic bounds. At a personal level, the award shows that age is no barrier to academic study and achievement (I am 75) and I hope that it will encourage others of all ages to continue to work towards their own goals.”

We will soon be launching our 'Where are they now' campaign and would love for you to take part!

The aim is to highlight what our alumni can achieve, their journey, and how UHI has helped them to achieve this. It will feature across all our social media channels, website, and case study materials.

You only need to answer a few short questions and attach a photo of yourself (professional would be great if you have one). It is important the photo is high-quality, with no one else in the photo.

She graduated this year with a first-class BEng (Hons) in mechanical engineering with UHI North West and Hebrides, and is now a maintenance engineer at LifeScan! She received her award at the UHI Inverness graduation in October.
