Session outline

Helen Coker

Technology enables us to work together at a distance. Relationships can be formed - utilising digital tools - which support learning, teaching, mentoring and coaching. Often though, when interviewing people about their engagement with technology, I am told 'it's just not the same as face to face'. In this session we'll explore the ways in which technology mediates our interactions with each other. How do we build trust in an online space? How can we mitigate the loss of non-verbal and para-verbal cues, the subtle and implicit feedback which we use when interacting in person?

This session forms part of the University Mentoring Scheme week being held from the 27th - 31st August.

The programme will provide an opportunity to attend webinars, video conference presentations and hands on workshops. Thursday and Friday will be a two day residential in Inverness to support and develop mentoring skills through hands on workshops with external and internal facilitators. A networking dinner for those attending Thursday and Friday will be available on Thursday night for informal networking with fellow mentors. Accommodation on Thursday night will be provided for 20 places.
