Biography

Dr Katie Murray is a Project Officer working on applied research projects related to cultural heritage and tourism at the Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research.

Her PhD was awarded in 2017 on ‘Memorials of Endurance and Adventure: Exhibiting British polar exploration c.1819-1930.’ She also has an MLitt in Museum and Gallery Studies and an MA (Hons) in Scottish Studies.

Since 2012 she has undertaken occasional contract work as a historian and guide on expedition cruises in the Antarctic, Arctic, Scotland and Ireland.  

She is a former curator of the South Georgia Museum.

Current research

Applied research projects centred around cultural heritage, marine tourism and scientific tourism. This includes 'The Coast that Shaped the World' (www.coast.scot) which has gathered and mapped almost 400 stories with the aim of encouraging travel to less-well visited areas and 'Wonder Seekers' (www.wonderseekers.com) which promotes tourism products that enhance learning in the outdoors.
