Professor Jim Hunter

Jim Hunter, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, talks about his recent book, Insurrection: Scotland’s Famine Winter, and takes questions on how he set about the archival and other research underlying his meticulous reconstruction of a brief, but often violent, episode: three months which brought widespread hunger, saw grain carts seized, ships boarded, harbours blockaded, a jail forced open, the military deployed and soldiers firing on protestors. You can view a recording of this talk which took place on 23 July, 2020 (below).
