Dr Darroch Bratt

The talk will examine the social world of illicit whisky distilling and smuggling from the experiences of the men and women who worked secretive stills, to the excisemen who had the unenviable task of enforcing flawed legislation and to the landlords whose tenants were engaged in this unlawful work. Dr Bratt will also examine the interactions between the distiller and the community and consider what the location of distilling sites might tell us about what type of activity illicit distilling was.

Dr Darroch Bratt is an alumnus of UHI Centre for History and completed his PhD studies in 2022. His passion for whisky comes from working for more than a decade in the Highland whisky industry near Loch Ness, while the interest in archaeology stems from his studies of Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen.

This is event is part of the Highland Archaeology Festival. The festival is provided by the Highland Council and runs over 3 weeks each late September/October to celebrate the heritage of the Highlands from earliest settlers to modern times, below ground and above.
