What is special about this course?
If you are interested in the role energy has to play in the future of engineering, the BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering degree is for you. The degree has been designed to meet the needs of the industry, ensuring you will be highly employable after graduation.
You will explore both conventional energy systems and renewable energy technologies. You will also undertake an engineering project, which will showcase your skills and knowledge in solving an industry-related problem to prospective employers.

Entry requirements
Year 1 of this course is a relevant HNC, such as HNC Engineering (Systems pathway), with a pass in Engineering Mathematics 2
Advanced entry to year two:
- Successful completion of a relevant 15 SQA credit HNC (such as the HNC Engineering (Systems pathway)) with a pass in Engineering Mathematics 2. To make an application please use the 'Apply' tab and indicate year two entry on your application
Advanced entry to year three:

How will I study my course?
- Full-time
- Part-time
- This course is mainly delivered online with scheduled sessions and tutorials. These are recorded and can be viewed at times that suit you if you are unable to attend the timetabled sessions. You can replay them as many times as needed. Some campuses may also schedule a face to face tutorial session
- Online study will be done via the university's virtual learning environment (VLE), with support from your tutors
- You will have the option to take part in an online induction each year
How long will my course last?
- Full-time: 3 years @ 24-30 hours per week
- Part-time: 6 years @ 12-15 hours per week
The number of hours per week indicates the total number of hours you should dedicate to the course, which includes time spent on online material as well as individual study and research.

Once you have successfully completed your BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering, you will be ready to compete in the employment market for a range of jobs in the engineering sector such as:

- Design/maintenance position in offshore industry
- Design/maintenance position in manufacturing industry
- Engineering manager in a wide range of industries

I gained a range of knowledge which has helped me in my career and provided a grounds for different areas. I've found that the real learning happens in the workplace, when you are using equipment, fault finding and digging deeper into system and this would not be possible without the foundations built from UHI.
I currently work as a Maintenance Technician at Siemens Gamesa on an offshore windfarm. I wanted to get involved in the renewable sector, and I go offshore to carry out work on wind turbines. Being able to get my degree whilst working full time and living at home allowed me to have amazing holidays and experiences which I wouldn’t have had if I moved away for university.
Chloe studied the BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering at UHI North, West and Hebrides.
I considered other universities but knew UHI through doing a previous course at UHI and not having to move out of the highlands made it very attractive. My studies have helped me get into engineering- I have already achieved a position with SSE for after I graduate! The staff at the UHI are incredibly supportive and are always happy to make time for you, my PAT has taken time to ensure that I have been supported.
Charlotte studied the BEng (Hons) Energy Engineering at UHI Inverness.
I chose UHI because it allowed me to stay at home close to family and friends whilst I studied. I had also had some friends study engineering degrees with UHI and had seen them go on to success so I thought it was a good choice for me.
I have nothing but positive things to say about the lecturers I had. Classes were a mixture of in-person at my home campus and online. As I progressed to later years, more and more classes became online. This wasn’t an issue, I could go to the campus whenever I felt like or needed to and the rest of the time I had the flexibility to study wherever I was at the time.
I also found that lecturers were by in large responsive to emails and would engage as much as I needed to learn the coursework. Lecturers were happy to discuss course material in detail at any time they were available and were also willing to share their experiences of working which were invaluable for setting me up for the world of professional working.
My favourite thing about studying at UHI has been the flexibility and being able to stay at home with my friends and family while getting my degree. The Western Isles where I live is such an unique place, and staying there has meant I can stay in touch with the culture I grew up in.
