Session Outline
The national framework for palliative and end of life care (PEOLC) for all health and social care professionals working in Scotland was published by NHS Education Scotland (NES) in 2018. The framework outlines 4 skills levels: informed, skilled, enhanced and expert. The informed level outlines the knowledge and skills in PEOLC required by all health and social service workers regardless of their context of practice. Thus, all new BSc in nursing graduates should have an informed level of knowledge and skills in PEOLC. Yet research reveals that current students, newly graduated students and practising nurses report a lack of knowledge and skills in PEOLC (Bassah et al. 2014) leaving them unprepared to care for the dying and bereaved.
This webinar will report on the findings of LTA-funded research project involving:
- A survey of student nurses’ perceptions of their knowledge and skills in palliative and end of life care.
- Developing a co-designed curriculum using participatory research workshops

Dr Clare Carolan (Lead researcher/PI), Lecturer in Department of Nursing, UHI. Clare is a practising GP with clinical and academic expertise in palliative care. Clare was part of a short-life working group informing the development National Education Scotland’s ‘Enriching & improving experience’ framework, this is the new national palliative and end of life care educational framework for health and social care professionals. Dr Gareth Davies (Co-investigator) Lecturer and programme leader: M.Ed. Tertiary & Higher Education; M.Ed. Digital Pedagogy; and PgCert Research Methods. Gareth is part of the Erasmus project team for AToM (Access to Masters) which has developed and tested bespoke software designed to help potential students make better informed applications for courses and programme teams make meaningful programme selection offers.
